Gibson’s L-1 design philosophy departed sharply from the flat German and Spanish-style guitars that dominated 19th-century America. Its archtop construction borrowed from violin luthiery, marrying craftsmanship and tonal innovation in a way that influenced virtually every subsequent acoustic guitar maker.

This particular model has been recently restored, with some of the cosmetic damage remaining, a sign of its long history.
